DC Comics Legacy Numbering

In my last post, I detailed what my answer would be if DC Comics President Diane Nelson came to me and said, "Duke, Jim and Dan have flown the coop, we can't find them anywhere, and now we don't know what to publish. Can you please, please tell us what to do?"

The answer was a line of comics split into 10 editorial houses, with 10 titles each, each published in one  of five formats — but most importantly to the purpose of this post, with the numbering restored to its original legacy sequence. As promised, this post explains how I arrived at my new start numbers, which seems an important thing to do given the sport Bleeding Cool has recently been having with Marvel over its legacy numbers. Just in case anyone at DC were to take up my suggestions, let's be sure we get those numbers right.

So, a couple of caveats —

1) These numbers are for May 2018, which presumes ACTION COMICS will hit #1,000 with its second March issue. Then, as I suggest, DC would use April as a skip month of one-shot specials, taking up the new formats and numbering system in May, which happens to be the 80th anniversary of Action #1 hitting the newsstands.

2) This legacy numbering accounts for all issues of a title actually issued, which is why I'd have Action skip from #1,000 to #1,008, to account for all the zero, million, and 24-point trick numberings.

3) Generally speaking, we are counting as part of a numbering only titles that had the exact title as the series in question. The exception is that if something is pretty close, and happened to be the primary title for the character or property at the time, we'll count it. Thus THE FLASH and THE FLASH: FASTEST MAN ALIVE are considered the same thing, as are LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES and THE LEGION. The basic idea we are trying to convey is this: What would the current issue number be if there had been not only no new No. 1s, but also no title changes and no trick numbers along the way? There are a few other exceptions Ill note where appropriate, below.

4) We do not count secondary series, annuals, or specials. SUPERMAN SPECIAL, for example is its own series. However, using the logic in Caveat #3 above, we do count THE ATOM SPECIAL in the numbering for our new Atom series, because those were not a special edition of anything, they were THE Atom title of the time. I think of them as tests for a new series. Going in the other direction, while we count THE LEGION, LEGION LOST, and even LEGION WORLDS in the numbering for LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, we do not count LEGIONNAIRES because it was a second series, and what we are looking for is the number for one continuous series. This is the reason we count SUPERMAN and ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN by the number of each title published, not by how the sequential numbering flowed back and forth between the two.

5) Sometimes an anthology series counts. To count as the numbering of a series for a character, the anthology or differently-titled book needs to have been THE book for that character in every sense but indicia title. So, for example, we count in the numbering for SGT. ROCK, those issues of OUR ARMY AT WAR in which he was the title star, with his name on the cover, often in larger type than the actual series title. But we don't count the OAAW issues from before Rock's tenure, which is why the new series would start with a lower number than the last one ended with.

6) We can't count a book twice. Thus, ADVENTURE COMICS #300-380 are counted in the numbering for that title, and not also in the numbering for our new Legion series. Similarly, we have to make a ruling on which hero gets credit for THE ATOM AND THE HAWKMAN. I chose The Atom since it continued his original numbering.

6) In some cases I cheat. For example, I decide that my new book, THE LEGION OF SUPER H.E.R.O.E.S. (different because HEROES is an acronym for Hazardous Environment Rescue Operations and Emergency Services) will use the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES numbering. I also decide that BATMAN AND ROBINS will use the BATMAN AND ROBIN numbering. However, I rule that NIGHTWING AND FLAMEBIRD does not get to pick up the NIGHTWING numbering. In that case, the decision comes down to consistency. Since I have separate titles for BATMAN and BATMAN AND ROBINS, I decide that NIGHTWING is distinct from NIGHTWING AND FLAMEBIRD, even though I don't call for a solo Nightwing series.

And, of course, for any title I gave a #1, I decided there is no existing corollary numbering series from which to draw.

So, those are the rules. If you spot any errors, inconsistencies, or outright stupidity on my part, please feel free to drop me a line with suggestions for revision. Thanks!
