THE PULL LIST: Comics pre-ordered for August 2017

Hey, gang!

Well, it's that time of the month again. No, not that time. It the time when I place my monthly order with my local comics shop, Zimmie's, in Lewiston, Maine.

There's actually not that much shocking or new on the list his month and perhaps my order is most notable for what I don't order. As you know, the monthly budget is $30/wk, or $120 total, after my 20 percent discount for ordering in advance, and Maine sales tax of 5.5 percent.

As always, when poring though PREVIEWS, I start with the DC section:

DC COMICS
And here's the surprise — I pass on BATMAN NIGHTS: METAL #1. And passing on this first special means I'm committing myself to giving up on the entire event. But it had to be done. I'm sorry, but I'm just not going to pay $5 for a 32-page comic. Not gonna happen. I can still remember back in the day swearing I'd never pay more than $2.95 for a comic book, too. But this time I'm drawing a hard line. Seriously, at $5, I'd rather invest in filling holes in my back issue runs.

Now, that said, the Kibry 100th birthday specials are also $5 books, but at least they're 48 pages. Still, I know I can't afford room in the budget for all six books. I elect to go with DARKSEID SPECIAL (because I figure Mark Evanier ought to be able to capture Kirby's spirit as well as anybody), THE SANDMAN SPECIAL (for the Jon Bodganove art), and THE NEWSBOY LEGION/BOY COMMANDOS SPECIAL (because, while I approach latter-day Howard Chaykin with some trepidation, this team-up does interest me). The other three books are a hard pass.

I also add in the FUTURE QUEST SHOWCASE issue, since I have a nostalgic fondness for these characters, and both this month's issue of SUPERGIRL and the SUPERGIRL ANNUAL. Those two get the nod because of the Emerald Empress appearance, and a need to check those boxes on by Legion of Super-Heroes anal-retentive collector's list.

No DCs get dropped this month, although the BATMAN '66/LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES one-shot does free up $3.99 for one of the above books.

MARVEL COMICS

Here I skip all the event titles and associated cross-overs, as well as most of the "Generations" specials. The lone exception is GENERATIONS: MIGHTY THOR/UNWORTHY THOR, because Jason Aaron.

I also tack on the SILVER SURFER issue, not that I expect it to actually come out in August. It'll probably roll up sometime in November.
.

AND THE REST . . .
I usually break the rest of the order our by publisher, but this month is a whole lot of, "Just the usual, ma'am." One new add is at Image, where I bite on MAGE: THE HERO DENIED. This is an odd purchase for me as I never bought into the two earlier Marge series, the first one having come out at a time when I did not happen to live within easy commuting distance of a comic book store. Meanwhile two of my regular Image books, MANIFEST DESTINY and PAPER GIRLS take the month off.

IDW will publish only one of my Disney titles in August. At Dynamite, I replace MIGHTY MOUSE with SHEENA (a 25¢ promo book) while my DC add-ons this month force me to cut PESTILENCE (Aftershock), UNDERDOG (American Mythology), ARCHIE and YOUR PAL, ARCHIE (from Archie, natch), and NORMANDY GOLD (Titan).

Underdog I don't think was actually solicited, but I'd decided #1 wasn't worth the price of admission, so it's not coming back on the list anyway. I just got tired of Archie, and Your Pal was just a curiosity purchase, just to see how close they can ape the classic style. Meanwhile, the issues released thus far of Pestilence and Normandy Gold are still sitting in my to-read pile, so I decided I must not have been as into them as I had supposed. I can always buy off the stands and re-add later to the Pull List if I fall in love once I do finally get around to reading them.

So, here's the final run-down of what I'll be buying in August:
