COMICS SALES: All the rest for November 2016

Okay, so far over the past couple of days, we’ve taken a look at the November comic books sales of smaller publishers to North American comic book shops via Diamond Distribution. We’ve covered IDW Publishing, Dark Horse Comics, BOOM Studios, Archie Comics, Valiant Entertainment, and Dynamite Entertainment. Of course, you can find similar charts for Marvel, DC, and Image comics on The Beat.

Now, it’s time to bat clean-up with everything else that charted in the Top 300 for November, as well as a few things that just missed the top grouping. As always, thanks go to ICv2.com and Comichron.com. They’re the ones who actually crunch the numbers, I’m just grouping their work by publishing and adding my own commentary.

BENITEZ PRODUCTIONS
164. LADY MECHANIKA: LA DAMA DE LA MUERTE ($3.99)

09/2016: (149)  Lady Mechanika: LDDLM #1 — 14,094
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (164)  Lady Mechanika: LDDLM #2 — 13,668 (-3.0%)

The highest charting book outside of the publishers mentioned above is a true “independent,” basically a self-publishing operation for Joe Benitez. Note this one has an astoundingly small second issue drop-off, especially so given a skip month between issues. That alone is quite an accomplishment.

ONI PRESS
167. INVADER ZIM ($3.99)

07/2015 ( 17) Invader Zim #1 —  70,481 [11,290]
11/2015 ( 78) Invader Zim #4 —  29,482 [3,918]
11/2015: ---
-----------------------------
12/2015 ( 86) Invader Zim #5 —  30,106 (-9.9%)
01/2016 ( 91) Invader Zim #6 —  23,639 (-21.5%)
02/2016 ( 91) Invader Zim #7 —  22,334 (-5.5%)
03/2016 ( 88) Invader Zim #8 —  21,691 (-2.9%)
04/2016: ---
05/2016 ( 78) Invader Zim #9 —  23,567 (+8.6%)
06/2016 (112) Invader Zim #10 — 19,453 (-17.5%)
07/2016 (121) Invader Zim #11 — 18,713 (-3.8%)
08/2016 (139) Invader Zim #12 — 17,697 (-5.4%)
09/2016 (140) Invader Zim #13 — 15,358 (-13.2%)
10/2016 (166) Invader Zim #14 — 14,219 (-7.4%)
11/2016 (167) Invader Zim #15 — 13,048 (-8.2%)

six months: -44.6%
one year:   -56.7%
from #1:    -84.0%

This title started out with huge apparent demand, generating more than 11k in reorders (the numbes in brackets) over two months for its debut issue. And yet, it doesn’t seem to have ever found its level. It looks like readers are bailing faster than retailers can predict when placing their orders.

202. RICK & MORTY ($3.99)

04/2015: (170) Rick & Morty #1 —  17,610
11/2015: (145) Rick & Morty #8 —  14,603
---------------------------
12/2015: (168) Rick & Morty #9 —  14,526 (-0.5%)
01/2016: (150) Rick & Morty #10 — 14,604 (+0.5%)
02/2016: (142) Rick & Morty #11 — 14,569 (-0.2%)
03/2016: (137) Rick & Morty #12 — 14,069 (-3.43%)
04/2016: (146) Rick & Morty #13 — 13,945 (-0.9%)
05/2016: (141) Rick & Morty #14 — 15,106 (+8.3%)
06/2016: (164) Rick & Morty #15 — 13,204 (-12.6%)
07/2016: (164) Rick & Morty #16 — 13,451 (+1.8%)
08/2016: (194) Rick & Morty #17 — 10,988 (-18.3%)
09/2016: (173) Rick & Morty #18 — 10,652 (-3.1%)
10/2016: (192) Rick & Morty #19 —  9,929 (-6.8%)
11/2016: (202) Rick & Morty #20 —  9,378 (-5.5%)

six months: -37.9%
one year:   -35.8%
from #1:    -46.7%

This started out the year as about the most stable book I’ve seen, out of hundreds examined. But recently the bottom appears to have dropped out. Is it coincidence that the increased slide seemed to coincide with the introduction of a second title for these characters?

236. RICK & MORTY: L’IL POOPY SUPERSTAR ($3.99)

07/2016: (130) Rick & Morty: Lil Poopy #1 — 17,288
08/2016: ---
09/2016: (184) Rick & Morty: Lil Poopy #2 —  9,756 (-43.6%)
09/2016: (236) Rick & Morty: Lil Poopy #3 —  8,782 (-10.0%)
10/2016: (228) Rick & Morty: Lil Poopy #4 —  7,559 (-13.9%)
11/2016: (236) Rick & Morty: Lil Poopy #5 —  7,141 (-5.5%)

Issues solicited by Oni for November release that did not make the Top 300 include:

Angel City #2
Brik #5
Exodus: The Life After #9
Jeff Steinberg: Champion of Earth #4
Kaijumak Season 2 #6
Metro #1
Night’s Dominion #3
Space Battle Lunchtime #6

ABSTRACT STUDIO
182. MOTOR GIRL ($3.99)

11/2016: (182) Motor Girl #1 — 11,587

The latest series out of Terry Moore’s self-publishing house starts out with pretty decent numbers. I’d expect to see a few thousand in reorders next month.

AFTERSHOCK COMICS
197. ANIMOSITY ($3.99)

08/2016: (209) Animosity #1 — 9,081
09/2016: (234) Animosity #2 — 6,301 (-30.6%)
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (197) Animosity #3 — 9,819 (+55.8%)

Issue #3 was solicited for an Oct. 26 release. I’m not really sure what they did to boost retailer interest above that for #1, other than a 1:10 horror-themed alternate cover.

222. SHIPWRECK ($3.99)

10/2016: (179) Shipwreck #1 — 12,266
11/2016: (222) Shipwreck #2 —  8,130 (-33.7%)

About standard for a second issue drop. We’ll see how low this goes.

284. ALTERS ($3.99)

09/2016: (190) Alters #1 — 9,337
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (284) Alters #2 — 5,224 (-44.1%)

A steeper than usual second-issue dive for Aftershock’s transgender hero.

325. ROUGH RIDERS ($3.99)

04/2016: (203) Rough Riders #1 — 8,711
15/2016: (294) Rough Riders #2 — 5,107 (-41.4%)
06/2016: (304) Rough Riders #3 — 5,440  (+6.5%)
07/2016: (307) Rough Riders #4 — 4,888 (-10.1%)
08/2016: (332) Rough Riders #5 — 4,692  (-4.0%)
09/2016: ---
10/2016: (316) Rough Riders #6 — 4,383  (-6.6%)
11/2016: (325) Rough Riders #7 — 4,227  (-3.6%)

This one has been out of the Top 300 for a while now, but I think John Jackson Miller of Comichron.com continues to track it because it started above the “and the rest” line.

Issues solicited by Aftershock for November release that did not make the charts (in some cases probably because they missed their release dates) include the following. For what it’s worth, Captain Kid is the one Aftershock comic I ordered, and it I think it was #3 that just came in this week.

Captain Kid #4
Black-Eyed Kids #8
Insexts #9

JOE BOOKS
210./256. DISNEY FROZEN ($2.99)

07/2016: (162) Disney Frozen #1 — 13,709
08/2016: ---
09/2016: ---
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (210) Disney Frozen #2 — 8,938 (-34.8%)
11/2016: (256) Disney Frozen #3 — 6,225 (-30.4%)

I presume the long delay between issues did nothing to help orders. Started well enough, though.

246. DISNEY PRINCESS ($2.99)

03/2016: (157) Disney Princess #1 — 12,217
04/2016: (226) Disney Princess #2 — 7,226 (-40.9%)
05/2016: (250) Disney Princess #3 — 6,425 (-11.1%)
06/2016: (252) Disney Princess #4 — 6,939 (+8.0%)
07/2016: ---
08/2016: (247) Disney Princess #5 — 7,228 (+4.2%)
09/2016: (221) Disney Princess #6 — 7,076 (-2.1%)
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (246) Disney Princess #7 — 6,695 (-5.4%)

Interesting that this one picked up for a few issues, before settling back down. Looks like Issue #3 will be the toughie to track down for completest in years to come.

297. DISNEY DARKWING DUCK ($2.99)

04/2016: (220) Disney Darkwing Duck #1 —7,770
05/2016: (296) Disney Darkwing Duck #2 —5,063 (-34.8%)
06/2016: ---
07/2016: (273) Disney Darkwing Duck #3 —5,588 (+10.4%)
08/2016: (302) Disney Darkwing Duck #4 —5,433  (-2.8%)
09/2016: (271) Disney Darkwing Duck #5 —5,224  (-3.8%)
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (297) Disney Darkwing Duck #6 —4,901  (-6.2%)

This one also had an uptick that seems to indicate retailers misjudged how many customers would bail after issue #1, but then it started to fall, while actually gaining downward momentum.

356. DISNEY PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN ($2.99)

09/2016: (245) Disney Pirates/Caribbean #1 —5,856
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (356) Disney Pirates/Caribbean #2 —3,524 (-39.8%)

This is actually the one Joe Book I’ve purchased and it actually took a couple of tries for my retailer to get copies from Diamond. I think he actually gave up on the first issue and went and got it from a competitor.

Most of the Joe Books that arrived at shops in November were originally solicited for earlier months. What was supposed to come out in November was Frozen #5 and Pirates #4. Also solicited for November, so far as regular comics go, was something called Star Vs. The Forces of Evil: Deep Trouble #3, which claims to be a Disney comic, but it’s not any property I’ve ever heard of.

I will also add that, based on the numbers above, I suspect the Joe Books have been seeing significant reorder activity that is not registering on the ICv2/Comichron charts as the extra copies are not breaking the Top 300 plane. So, the numbers on these books may not be as bad as they look. Even so, I would have expected comics based on Disney properties, maybe even especially so the newer ones, to have performed much, MUCH better than this. That they have not may be due to the publisher, a Canadian company, I believe, being a new and unknown quantity for many retailers.

TITAN COMICS
220. TANK GIRL GOLD ($3.99)

09/2016: (161) Tank Girl Gold #1 — 12,644
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (220) Tank Girl Gold #2 —  8,225 (-34.9%)

233. DARK SOULS: WINTER’S SPITE ($3.99)

11/2016: (233) Dark Souls Winter’s Spite #1 — 7,198

252. DOCTOR WHO: SUPREMACY OF THE CYBERMEN ($3.99)

07/2016: (184) Doctor Who: SupremacyCybermen #1 — 11,183
08/2016: (240) Doctor Who: SupremacyCybermen #2 —  7,516 (-32.8%)
09/2016: (224) Doctor Who: SupremacyCybermen #3 —  6,950 (-7.5%)
10/2016: (242) Doctor Who: SupremacyCybermen #4 —  6,505 (-6.4%)
11/2016: (252) Doctor Who: SupremacyCybermen #5 —  6,466 (-0.6%)

01/2016: (188) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #4 —  8,438 (-16.5%)
01/2016: (180) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #5 —  9,595 (+13.7%)
02/2016: (183) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #6 —  9,618  (+0.2%)
03/2016: (200) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #7 —  8,019 (-16.6%)
04/2016: (263) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #8 —  8,241  (+2.8%)
05/2016: (222) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #9 —  7,587  (-7.9%)
06/2016: (232) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #10 — 7,367  (-2.9%)
06/2016: (249) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #11 — 7,295  (-1.0%)

11/2016: (263) Doctor Who 10th Year 2 #16 — 5,921  (-3.6%)

265. DOCTOR WHO: THE 12th DOCTOR, YEAR TWO ($3.99)

01/2016: (170) Doctor Who 12th Year 2 #1 — 10,611

05/2016: (230) Doctor Who 12th Year 2 #6 —  7,381  (-1.9%)
06/2016: (267) Doctor Who 12th Year 2 #7 —  6,582 (-10.8%)
07/2016: ---
08/2016: (287) Doctor Who 12th Year 2 #8 —  5,798 (-11.9%)
09/2016: (256) Doctor Who 12th Year 2 #9 —  5,584  (-3.7%)

11/2016: (263) Doctor Who 12th Year 2 #11 — 5,842  (-7.9%)

294. DOCTOR WHO: THE 9th DOCTOR ($3.99)

04/2016: (183) Doctor Who 9th #1 — 10,576
05/2016: (231) Doctor Who 9th #2 —  7,380 (-30.2%)

11/2016: (294) Doctor Who 9th #7 —  4,928 (-11.6%)

299. WARHAMMER 40,000: WILL OF IRON ($3.99)

10/2016: (229) Warhammer 40k Will of Iron #1 — 7,522
11/2016: (299) Warhammer 40k Will of Iron #2 — 4,871 (-35.2%)

I’m a big fan of Doctor Who, but as with Star Trek, I’ve never really warmed to the show as a comic book. At first it looks like maybe Titan is occasionally tossing in extra covers to boost the numbers, but as I look closer, it seems to me that maybe retailers are having some trouble gauging interest in the various Who series. I’m betting if any retailers came on here, they might tell us that Titan’s Doctor Who books, more than any other, tend to be an impulse buy. That is to day, their customers don’t pre-order it as a general rule, but when they have a slow week with not much arriving on their pull list, these are the first books they grab at off the stands.

BONGO COMICS
255. SIMPSONS COMICS ($3.99)

11/1996: (162) Simpsons Comics #26 — 21,750
11/2001: (151) Simpsons Comics #64 — 15,396
11/2006: (191) Simpsons Comics #124 — 9,878
11/2011: (233) Simpsons Comics #184 — 6,853
11/2012: (230) Simpsons Comics #196 — 6,902 (+0.7%)
12/2013: (257) Simpsons Comics #207 — 6,794 (-1.6%)
12/2014: (254) Simpsons Comics #216 — 6,758 (-0.5%)
10/2015: (228) Simpsons Comics #224 — 7,123 (+5.4%)
11/2015: ---

12/2015: ---
01/2016: (230) Simpsons Comics #225 — 6,063 (-14.9%)
02/2016: (221) Simpsons Comics #226 — 6,600  (+8.9%)
03/2016: (224) Simpsons Comics #227 — 6,675  (+1.1%)
04/2016: (246) Simpsons Comics #228 — 6,448  (-3.4%)
05/2016: (251) Simpsons Comics #229 — 6,425  (-0.4%)
06/2016: (275) Simpsons Comics #230 — 6,424  (-0.0%)
07/2016: (249) Simpsons Comics #231 — 6,513  (+1.4%)
08/2016: (267) Simpsons Comics #232 — 6,397  (-1.8%)
09/2016: ---
10/2016: (246) Simpsons Comics #233 — 6,394  (-0.0%)
11/2016: (255) Simpsons Comics #234 — 6,326  (-1.1%)

six months: -1.5%
one year:  -11.2%
two years:  -6.4%
five years: -7.7%
ten years: -40.0%

Except for that weird drop and rebound at the beginning of the year, it’d be hard, I think, to find a more stable comic than the Simpsons. Sure, retailers don’t move a whole lot of copies, but it must be peace of mind for them to be reasonably confident of how many they can sell, month in and month out.

269. FUTURAMA COMICS ($3.99)

11/2006: (208) Futurama Comics #28 — 8,123
11/2011: (257) Futurama Comics #58 — 6,138
11/2012: (239) Futurama Comics #64 — 6,435 (+4.8%)
10/2013: (304) Futurama Comics #69 — 6,358 (-1.2%)
11/2014: (269) Futurama Comics #73 — 5,994 (-5.7%)
11/2015: (247) Futurama Comics #77 — 6,122 (+2.1%)
---------------------------------
12/2015: ---
01/2016: ---
02/2016: (239) Futurama Comics #78 — 5,768 (-5.8%)
03/2016: ---
04/2016: ---
05/2016: (268) Futurama Comics #79 — 5,847 (+1.4%)
06/2016: ---
07/2016: ---
08/2016: (286) Futurama Comics #80 — 5,892 (+0.8%)
09/2016: ---
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (269) Futurama Comics #81 — 5,659 (-4.0%)

six months: -3.2%
one year:   -7.6%
two years:  -5.6%
five years: -7.8%
ten years: -30.2%

Looks like winters are hard on the Futurama crew. This is probably the first place retailers chop when dollars get tight.

296. SPONGEBOB COMICS ($3.99)

12/2011: (215) Spongebob Comics #6 —  7,334
11/2012: (214) Spongebob Comics #14 — 7,629  (+4.0%)
11/2013: (249) Spongebob Comics #26 — 6,741 (-11.6%)
11/2014: (259) Spongebob Comics #38 — 6,201  (-8.0%)
11/2015: (241) Spongebob Comics #50 — 6,366  (+2.7%)
--------------------------------
12/2015: (194) Spongebob Comics #51 — 6,020 (-5.4%)
01/2016: (245) Spongebob Comics #52 — 5,657 (-6.0%)
02/2016: (243) Spongebob Comics #53 — 5,630 (-0.5%)
03/2016: (255) Spongebob Comics #54 — 5,548 (-1.5%)
04/2016: (269) Spongebob Comics #55 — 5,471 (-1.4%)
05/2016: (276) Spongebob Comics #56 — 5,589 (+2.2%)
06/2016: (302) Spongebob Comics #57 — 5,569 (-0.5%)
07/2016: (288) Spongebob Comics #58 — 5,348 (-3.8%)
08/2016: (304) Spongebob Comics #59 — 5,341 (-0.1%)
09/2016: (274) Spongebob Comics #60 — 5,159 (-3.4%)
10/2016: (297) Spongebob Comics #61 — 4,985 (-3.4%)
11/2016: (296) Spongebob Comics #62 — 4,901 (-1.7%)

six months: -12.3%
one year:   -23.0%
two years:  -20.1%
five years  -33.2%

I take back what I said about the Simpsons, Spongebob is the very model of stability. I retailers could get monthly numbers this consistent on all their books, we would have some VERY happy retailers, I think. Although, when we look over the long term, I guess those small monthly drops do add up. FWIW, Spongebob is technically published by United Plankton, but there is some sort of agreement with Bongo, so I’m counting it here.

371. SIMPSONS ILLUSTRATED ($4.99)

What is this, a reprint comic? It’s publishing schedule seems pretty erratic, and it’s hard to track, given its basement dwelling outside the Top 300.

STRANGER
231. VAMPIRE HUNTER D MESSAGE MARS ($3.99)

11/2016: (231) Vampire Hunter D Message Mars #1 — 7,234

I haven’t a clue what this is all about. Certainly, it’s not anything I noticed in the Previews catalog.

AARDVARK-VANAHEIM
241. CEREBUS IN HELL ($4.00)

11/2016 (241) Cerebus in Hell #0 — 6,896

Guess I missed this, too. I had no idea Dave Sim was up to his old tricks. Not great numbers though. A different earth pig for a different age, I guess.

BLACK MASK STUDIOS
248. BLACK ($3.99)

10/2016: (176) Black #1 — 12,344
11/2016: (248) Black #2 —  6,602 (-46.5%)

291. NO ANGEL ($3.99)

11/2016: (291) No Angel #1 — 4,957

361. THE FOREVERS ($3.99)

09/2016: (218) The Forevers #2 — 7,237
10/2016: ---
11/2016: (361) The Forevers #2 — 3,418 (-52.8%)

This are some hard second issue drops for the Los Angeles-based company, a relatively new firm founded in 2012. The company also solicited The Skeptics #2 for November, but it either missed the month, or the Top 300.

NBM
260. TALES FROM THE CRYPT ($3.99)

11/2016 (260) Tales from the Crypt #1 — 6,007

I dunno. The umpteenth-trazillion reprint of this material, I guess.

BROADSWORD COMICS

Broadsword is Jim Balent’s self-publishing house. You know him best from a long run on Catwoman in the 1990s. Tarot Witch has been around since 1999, but, I’ll be honest with you, as big a comics fan as I am, I never heard of it until this week when I sat down to track small publisher sales.

AVATAR PRESS
292. CINEMA PURGATORIO ($6.99)

11/2016: (292) Cinema Purgatorio #7 — 4,946

Avatar puts out a bunch of books. This one had six different covers and still barely cracked the Top 300. The company also solicited Providence #11 and War Stories #22 for this month, both with multiple covers.

ALBATROSS FUNNYBOOKS
312. SPOOKHOUSE ($3.99)

10/2016: (190) Spookhouse #1 — 10,240
11/2016: (312) Spookhouse #2 —  4,547 (-55.6%)

I’m a big fan of Eric Powell, so this is damn disappointing for me. That’s just a massive plummet in orders. And it surprises me, given Powell is a known quantity and his Goon was a steady seller for years. Perhaps we’ll see some nice, healthy reorder activity next month. It’s possible retailers were not convinced #2 would come out on time and held back on initial orders.

Of course, I’m also disappointed by the fact I’m still waiting for my copy of #1. My LCS claims Diamond shorted them and never replaced the book, forcing him to place a reorder. I have not wanted to read #2 until the if-and-when I get #1.

Okay, from here on in just the numbers with no commentary or trend tracking, because, I think you’ll agree, this has been a lot of work.

11/2016: (342) Grimm Tales of Terror Holiday Spec #nn — 3,810

11/2016: (360) Evil Heroes #3 — 3,457
